In This Issue • Bring on the New Year The New Year is almost upon us and with it comes an opportunity for resolutions. Kids don’t get into resolutions the way adults do, but a new school semester, like a new year on the calendar, is a chance to improve in one or more areas. One such area is attitude. Attitude comes into play at school all the time. A student may enter some classes excited to be there, and enjoying the teacher and the subject. Maybe he or she enters other classes “knowing” that the class will be boring, and guess what... the class is boring. Many students spend half their days at school wishing they were somewhere else, doing something else. How successful do you think they will be with that attitude? So how does a student build a winning attitude? It's as easy as ABC – Attitude, Belief, and Curiosity. It's possible to transform an attitude of “School is boring” to “Learning is awesome!” At SuperCamp, we tell students to write a statement like that in a place where they will see it whenever they study. We tell them to go so far as to say it in their mind when they're in class. We encourage them to find a phrase that works for them, and write it in big colorful letters in their notebook! In time, they start believing it. How can a student bring curiosity to the classroom? In addition to looking for personal connections and fun parts of the class topic, students may find it valuable to ask, “Why would I want to learn what the teacher is teaching?” The answer may be as simple as, “So I can pass my exams.” And why would I want to pass my exams? Maybe I'll get more free time; maybe I'll get into the college I want to go to. Why would I want those things? So I can be more successful in life. With this kind of curiosity and by understanding what's in it for them, students will find they're learning with ease. Attitude is a small thing that makes a big difference! Hopefully, it can carry your student to new heights in the new year. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Do you want to send your son or daughter back to SuperCamp in 2009 and save hundreds of dollars in the process? This Key can make a big difference in the way we live our lives and in the way our sons and daughters approach school. It can make each day exciting, productive and fulfilling. The key to making This Is It! work in one’s life is to make it a habit. First, we need to become conscious of when we’re not using it. When we catch ourselves feeling bored or daydreaming about some past or future event, we can turn that moment around. Another tool we can use is called reframing. This simply means looking at a negative task or situation from a different angle, or framing it differently. Instead of focusing on the task, focus on the outcome. We find the value in what we’re doing and focus on it. Reframing can work very well for students, by enabling them to shift their view from having to do homework, for example, to the end benefit – a better grade on a test, a higher GPA, or the great feeling of writing an “A” paper. So, when we make something else “It,” we miss what’s going on around us in the moment. Don’t let that happen. Live in the present – make right now It! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• SuperCamp College Profile - Drake
The University is conveniently located at the intersection of interstates 35 and 80, an easy drive from several major cities, including Chicago, Kansas City, Minneapolis and Omaha. The Des Moines International Airport is just a 15-minute drive from campus. This will mark SuperCamp’s second year at Drake. In 2009, we will run a Senior Forum and a Junior Forum camp concurrently. Many families who want to enroll a high school and a middle school student in SuperCamp like having this “double track” situation, which enables both kids to attend the same location at the same time. So, if your son or daughter attended a different SuperCamp college campus in 2008, you might want to create some variety by trying SuperCamp at Drake in 2009. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• |
