10 Easy Ways to Study More Effectively

In previous issues of ParentConnect, we have shared study and other learning tips that your SuperCamp grad received while at SuperCamp. We’ve pulled 10 of these tips together and put them into a free downloadable report entitled “10 Easy Ways to Study More Effectively.”

While you’ve seen most of these tips before, we thought you might like to download the document and review the information one more time and, perhaps, share it with your kids. Also, you’re welcome to pass along the link to your friends and other family members.

Paving the Way for Summer

Staff PhotoEven though we’re still five months away from our first SuperCamp of 2009, we’re busy preparing for another big summer. And, of course, preparation starts with our great SuperCamp staff. Our first training program of the year took place last weekend at our headquarters in Oceanside, California. Called Paving the Way, this training is for potential first-time facilitators. Participants included teachers as well as former SuperCamp team leaders who are ready to move up to the facilitator role.

Staff training continues throughout the winter and spring months with several programs for facilitators, team leaders and all other camp positions, so that by the time summer arrives and students show up at SuperCamp, every person on staff at all of our SuperCamp locations is fully prepared and enthusiastic to make each camper’s ten days meaningful, valuable, and fun.

Commitment

Commitment
As SuperCamp president, Bobbi DePorter, writes in her book, The 8 Keys of Excellence – Principles to Live By, commitment has become an overused word. Whether it’s in the world of sports, business or education, the word commitment has become somewhat hackneyed. However, in the world of SuperCamp, commitment takes on special meaning for our staff and campers.

As one of the 8 Keys of Excellence, what exactly does commitment mean? In simple language, it is a choice. You choose to stay focused on your task at hand, whether it’s your grand vision, a major goal, a short-term project, or a daily chore.

An important step in harnessing the powerful energy of commitment is discovering where one’s commitment lies. We encourage campers to think about what excites them, what spurs them into action, what changes they want to make. In effect, we are prodding them into discovering what their vision is.

We tell campers that the decisive act of making a commitment sets into motion an energy field of helpful incidents to propel them forward and to overcome obstacles until they reach their goals. Strong commitment gives one the power to effect change. Many who have used this Key have literally changed the world.

If you go to the Videos & Photos page at SuperCamp.com and click on the SuperCamp Video link, you’ll see a new six-and-a-half minute video created from footage we shot at two of our camp locations last summer. We’ve also produced a new DVD that runs just over 17 minutes. Both the online video and the DVD do a great job of capturing the essence of what SuperCamp is all about – the fun, the positive energy, the learning, and the joy. Be sure to tell your friends to check out the online video and to request a DVD and brochure.

Speaking of videos, you can look for SuperCamp in an upcoming episode of Life & Leisure Television, which is a show broadcast on Bravo and on regional cable and DirecTV stations around the country and in Canada. The four-minute segment includes scenes from SuperCamp 2008 and interviews with SuperCamp president, Bobbi DePorter, and two SuperCamp facilitators, Amy Smith and Weston Kieschnick.

SuperCamp College Profile – Cal State San Marcos

Cal State San MarcosIn 1989 Cal State University San Marcos became the first comprehensive U.S. university to be founded in two decades and the twentieth campus in the CSU system. In the 20 years since then, Cal State San Marcos has grown steadily and now boasts an enrollment of over 9,000 students that is projected to exceed 11,000 by next year.

The beautiful campus is located on 304 rolling acres nestled into the foothills above the city of San Marcos in North San Diego County. It is easily accessible from anywhere in Southern California by freeway and within minutes of the several great North County beaches.

The technology-rich school is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access and numerous “smart” classrooms with advanced multimedia equipment. Already featuring many new academic buildings and dorms, construction is underway on several state-of-the-art structures.
